The base of the bowl bursts into a vibrant, glossy crimson red. This intense colour, reminiscent of magma or living fire, was one of the most sought-after hallmarks of German ceramic production of the period. Between the dark brown of the rim and the red of the base, there is a fascinating transitional band where the two glazes blend, creating an almost ‘burnt’ effect. The numbers on the base, 341-28, unequivocally identify this piece as a creation by Scheurich Keramik, one of West Germany’s most famous and important ceramic manufacturers: 341 identifies the square bowl model with rounded corners and high rims, whilst 28 indicates the width of the piece, which measures exactly 28 centimetres.
