Image dimensions: 32 x 44 cm. Frame dimensions: 58 x 46.5 x 5 cm. Frans Masereel had already made a name for himself during the First World War through pacifist publications, which were also honored with exhibitions in the post-war period. In 1922, he moved to Paris and devoted himself increasingly to painting. Before the Masereels fled Paris in 1940, Masereel captured the essence of people with their fears and intense emotions – often embedded in the Parisian cityscape. In contrast, here he also depicts an introverted person, clearly marked by inner conflict, in front of a Parisian shop window, holding an imposing hand, possibly as an advertising icon for a glove shop.
