Exquisite oil on panel by the French painter Fernand Quignon, the pseudonym of Ferdinand Just Quignon, a landscape painter born in Paris in 1854. The son of a cabinetmaker, he initially worked in the family business as a furniture designer and draftsman. Passionate about drawing and printmaking, he decided to pursue his dream and became a painter, exhibiting for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris in 1880, at just 25 years old.
A painter straddling Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, he was deeply influenced by his numerous stays in Pont-Aven. There he met many artists, including Schuffenecker, who in turn introduced him to Gauguin. Gradually, his painting, while remaining rooted in the classicism of his themes, began to incorporate vibrant and highly personal tones, as well as strong contrasts.
As this landscape demonstrates, Fernand Quignon's work is a true symphony of light, characterized by his masterful command of plein air painting. This work depicts a wheat field before harvest, with a figure in the background. The landscape conveys calm, serenity, and harmony thanks to the color palette used and the balance of the composition. Period carved and gilded wooden frame.
Impressionism, which originated in France in the last third of the 19th century, was an artistic movement defined primarily through painting. It was characterized mainly by its pursuit of capturing the light of a specific moment in its works, employing a loose, impasto, and very rapid brushstroke. Furthermore, it focused on depicting the beauty of the landscape, without an apparent message or social commentary, an aspect that links it to Post-Impressionism.
