The sheet combines exotic New World and Old World species in a striking composition that showcases the extraordinary diversity of these often misunderstood but ecologically essential birds. Published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the celebrated *Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche*, the print features the King Vulture (*Vultur papa*), White-headed Vulture (*Vultur leucocephalus*), Lappet-faced Vulture (*Vultur tracheliotus*), and the magnificent Bearded Vulture or Lammergeier (*Gypaetus barbatus*). Dominating the upper left is the spectacular King Vulture, one of the most colorful members of the vulture family. Native to Central and South America, it is distinguished by its vivid orange, red, and purple facial skin and powerful beak. Opposite appears the White-headed Vulture, a rare African species known for its elegant pale head and strong scavenging abilities. The lower section depicts two of Africa and Eurasia's most impressive birds of prey. The Lappet-faced Vulture is among the largest vultures on the African continent, while the Bearded Vulture, famous for feeding on bone marrow and dropping bones from great heights to crack them open, has fascinated naturalists for centuries. Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862) was renowned for producing finely detailed lithographs during the infancy of lithographic printing. His works combined scientific precision with decorative beauty, helping introduce European audiences to exotic wildlife from around the globe. The careful hand coloring, elegant poses, and balanced composition make this plate one of the most visually appealing ornithological subjects from the series. Today, original Brodtmann bird lithographs are highly sought after by collectors of ornithology, natural history, wildlife art, and early scientific illustration. This sheet is especially desirable due to its dramatic subject matter and the inclusion of several iconic vulture species rarely encountered together in a single composition.
