A striking example of late 19th-century Chinese folk artistry, this antique wedding dowry basket features a rare, complete footed carrier frame configuration. Crafted from sturdy bentwood and wood solids, the piece is finished in a deep, dark red lacquer and adorned with exquisite hand-painted gold gilt ornamentation.
The domed lid is beautifully detailed with a traditional imperial dragon amidst stylized clouds, symbolizing good fortune and power. The stacked nesting tiers are bordered by classic geometric Greek-key (meander) bands and delicate floral scrolls. The substantial structural carrying frame is reinforced with rustic, hand-forged iron bracket work, rivets, and a top loop handle, showcasing its authentic age and utilitarian history. The interiors of the nesting boxes are finished in a clean, stark black lacquer.

As is typical and expected for authentic utilitarian lacquer pieces of this vintage, there is visible chipping, flaking, and paint loss to the lacquer on the lower footing and bottom edges of the frame. The iron hardware shows a beautiful rustic oxidation. The gold gilt work on the lid remains remarkably clear and vibrant. less
