This beautiful bronze sculpture is one of the most recognizable images known across the world – Lady Justice. The pure bronze is created by utilizing the Lost Wax Method. It sits on green marble base, and bears the signature "A. Mayer".
Alois Mayer was born in March 1855 in Füssen, Germany. From 1882 he lived in Munich and from about 1885, he was an assistant in the studio of Professor Wilhelm von Rümann, while making his own pieces of art & sculpture.
Lady Justice has roots in ancient civilizations, including Egypt, Greece, but it is the Roman goddess Justitia that became the primary inspiration for the modern Lady Justice, embodying the virtue of justice in Western legal tradition.
The scales represent the careful weighing of evidence and claims, ensuring that judgments are based on rational assessment rather than bias or emotion. The freely hanging scales emphasize that evidence should stand on its own merit.
The sword symbolizes the authority and power of the law to enforce decisions. The double-edged sword indicates that justice applies equally to all parties and that judgments are final and binding.
The blindfold signifies impartiality and objectivity, reflecting the ideal that justice should not be influenced by wealth, status, race, or personal characteristics. The blindfold encourages decisions based solely on evidence and legal principles.
The toga or robes represent the dignity, responsibility, and philosophical foundation of the legal system. In this depictions Lady Justice is also trampling a snake, symbolizing victory, peace, and triumph over corruption or evil.
