Ancient artists traditionally portrayed him with a distinctively high, balding forehead, a broad, upturned nose, and a thick, flowing beard.
The profile presentation mimics the style of classical cameos, coins, and ancient stone intaglios.
Pieces like this were incredibly popular during the 18th and 19th centuries as souvenirs for wealthy European travelers embarking on the "Grand Tour".
