East German Wardrobe in Oak and Birch Veneer with Textured Glass Doors, 1959
This original East German wardrobe from 1959 combines the clean lines of early post-war modernism with high-quality materials and ample storage space. Crafted from oak and birch veneer and featuring characteristic textured glass doors, it is an authentic piece of furniture from the late 1950s and an exceptional example of East German furniture craftsmanship.
The wardrobe originates from Friedrichroda in Thuringia and remained in the same family for decades. Particularly noteworthy is the original purchase receipt from the HO (Handelsorganisation, a state-run retail organization) from 1959, which accompanies the piece and documents its provenance—a rare detail that makes the history of this piece traceable.
Design-wise, the wardrobe impresses with its balanced proportions and the combination of different materials. The frame is finished with warm oak veneer, while the doors are crafted from light birch veneer. The two center doors feature decorative textured glass that softly refracts the light, giving the front a vibrant depth. Dark wood frames create elegant contrasts and underscore the understated design of the piece.
The interior is functionally designed and offers versatile storage options. On the left side are five spacious shelves for clothes, sweaters, or bedding. The center and right halves of the wardrobe each have a hanging rail with a length of approximately 135 cm and 149 cm, respectively, making them ideal for coats, dresses, or suits. An original mirror is also located on the inside of one door.
The wardrobe was carefully cleaned, maintained, and treated with a high-quality antique polish by Sinteins. The original surface was intentionally preserved to maintain its authentic character and natural patina. The wood now displays a warm, satin sheen. The locks function perfectly, and two original keys are included.
with its timeless design, this wardrobe blends harmoniously into Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern, Minimalist, Vintage, Industrial, or Contemporary interiors. It is equally suitable as a high-quality furnishing element for boutiques, hotels, vacation rentals, or stylish commercial spaces.
Original pieces of furniture of this quality with documented provenance are rare today. The combination of its original condition, high-quality veneers, textured glass, and verifiable provenance makes this wardrobe a special collector's item and, at the same time, a functional piece of furniture for everyday use.
