No idol in China is more widely worshiped than Caishen, the God of Wealth. Called upon for blessings of wealth and prosperity, his image was found in nearly every home, particularly during celebrations for the Lunar New Year.
This antique Chinese altar figure dates to the early 20th century and depicts the God of Wealth in glazed ceramic. Seated upon a throne, Caishen presides over the home with a watchful eye, draped in official's robes and donned in military armor. The earthenware figure is cloaked in a dark brown glaze that drips and flows with fluid movement, pooling in the contours with streaks of light brown, green and iridescent blues.
