This primitive ceramic vessel is a 19th-century incense burner attributed to the Bai minority culture of Yunnan province. Its charred surface indicates the black clay vessel was originally used for burning fragrant incense, plants or ritual offerings.
The unusual censer was sculpted by hand in the shape of a reclining cow or ox, its legs tucked and head peeking out with curiosity. The sides are etched with Chinese characters and clouded with smoke patterns imparted by the fire. Rich with character, the clay censer lives on today as an incredible cachepot for houseplants or flowers.
