As motifs in Chinese art, rams and sheep represent the breath of light and life, which returns each year when winter thaws and yields to spring. Originally an altar charm or brush rest, the antique ram is glazed in the style of Tang-dynasty (618-906 AD) sancai ware, or three color ware, named for the green, amber, and creme-colored glazes that flow together across its sculptural form.
