Hand-carved from a solid block of limestone, this small stone vessel is an antique Chinese incense burner from the 19th century or earlier. Placed within a shrine or atop a home altar, the stone censer would have been filled with an incense of aromatic plants and oils and set alight to cleanse interiors, measure prayer and honor one's ancestors.
The incense burner is shaped to a rectangular form with a shallow basin and tapered sides that narrow to a footed base. Minimal and refined, the small pot brings the texture of stone to modern spaces as an unexpected planter or candle holder.
Natural fissure in stone along one side.
