Hand-carved from a solid block of limestone, this rustic stone vessel is an antique Chinese incense burner from the 19th century or earlier. Placed within a shrine or atop a home altar, the stone censer would have been filled with an incense of aromatic plants and oils and set alight to cleanse interiors, measure prayer and honor one's ancestors.
The incense burner has a primitive, chiseled texture, shaped to a rectangular form with a shallow basin and banded pedestal base. Today, we love the raw texture it brings to modern spaces as an unexpected planter or candle holder.
