Stone drums such as this were fixtures of courtly gardens and outdoor pavilions, contrasting foliage with the permanence of stone and providing a place to sit and ponder.

The antique drum has a smooth, tapered shape and is etched with an abstract design of curved lines. Meant to give the illusion of two stools nested within each other, this shape recalls the motif of interlocking coins, a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Gently weathered from a century of use, the drum has a quiet simplicity and is ideal today as a minimalist side table, pedestal or garden stool.
