Originally used for pickling and food preservation, this 19th-century ceramic pot is decorated with two serpentine dragons winding around the exterior towards a flaming "pearl of wisdom." This motif of twin dragons represents change, growth and the pursuit of knowledge. The dragons are painted in white slip beneath brown glaze to achieve a low relief texture and golden color, while a contrasting glaze finishes the interior in an upbeat shade of soft turquoise. Today, we love this pot as a garden planter filled with lush greenery or flowers.
