These rustic stools … Read more More portable than chairs, stools were a versatile seating option for Qing-dynasty scholars, nobles, and peasants alike. These rustic stools from Shanxi province were crafted at the turn of the century and perfectly marry form and function.

Constructed with mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws, the stools have a balanced design of four splayed legs, straight stretcher bars and an eight-sided seat. A lucky number in Chinese culture, eight is also a pun for "expanding wealth," giving the pair the added blessing of wealth and prosperity.

Large characters painted in red beneath one seat identifies its previous owner, adding to the stool's storied character. The unfinished elmwood has developed a rich patina, accentuating the grain with a smooth texture only time can achieve.
