An elegant 19th-century Classical Revival sofa boasting a storied Canadian maritime lineage connected to the historic Holland family of Prince Edward Island. Acquired from a descendant in Halifax, Nova Scotia, this piece carries oral history tying it to the estate of Samuel Holland — Canada’s pioneering Surveyor General — and more likely descended through his son, prominent PEI political figure and surveyor John Frederick Holland, or his widow Marie-Josephe Rolette at Tryon, PEI. The piece even boasts a bicoastal chapter, having traveled to California and back with family members before returning to the Maritimes.
The sofa features a beautifully sculpted, exposed wood frame with an undulating serpentine crest rail, elegant scrolled arms, and classic turned legs resting on original brass caster wheels. It was reupholstered by the previous owner in a sophisticated, neutral cream and beige scrollwork vine motif that compliments its traditional lines. It remains highly serviceable, structurally sound, and full of historical character.
