complete details of the painting (click here)
the saint sebastian depicted in this splendid painting reproduces, in meticulous detail, the famous composition created in 1529 by the florentine master andrea del sarto, originally conceived as an altarpiece for the company of saint sebastian in florence. The work is now known as "saint sebastian medici" due to its historic membership in the medici family collection.
unlike traditional 15th-century depictions, in which the saint is shown tied to a pole and pierced by numerous arrows, here his body is healthy and unwounded, focusing on a purely spiritual dimension.
the saint's attributes are reduced to the essentials: two gracefully held arrows in his right hand and the palmette of martyrdom in his left, dividing the image space and drawing attention to the palpable ascetic tension of his face, his eyes turned upward in divine contemplation.
the saint is idealized as a youthful beauty, revealing his state of ecstasy, conveying to the viewer an example of absolute devotion and faith: his depiction transcends physical pain and elevates him to a figure of spiritual triumph.
the naked, hairless torso highlights tense, well-rounded, and academic muscles, emerging from the depths of the underlying darkness, illuminated by a raking light, typical of the anatomical study of the high renaissance and the mannerist influences of michelangelo.
