Katherine "Kathy" Belling was an accomplished Wisconsin-based multi-disciplinary artist who balanced a prolific personal studio practice with a foundational role in regional arts education. Renowned for her mastery of both fluid and structural mediums, her career was defined by an elegant synergy between delicate watercolor painting and rustic ceramic arts.
Through her regional exhibitions and her 23-year tenure as an educator at Janesville Parker High School, Belling left an indelible mark on the cultural fabric of Southern Wisconsin.
Core Mediums and Artistic Style
Belling’s personal portfolio was celebrated for its versatility, seamlessly bridging the gap between two-dimensional representation and three-dimensional form:
-Watercolor Painting: Her paintings focused primarily on local landscapes, nature, and organic themes, influenced heavily by her love for outdoor athletics like canoeing and cross-country skiing. Her watercolor work was recognized for its precise control of fluid gradients, rich translucent layering, and its ability to capture the distinct, shifting light of the upper Midwest.
-Ceramic Arts & Pottery: Complementing her painting, Belling was an accomplished ceramicist. Her pottery and ceramic sculptures often merged functional design with natural textures, showcasing a deep technical understanding of clay preparation, wheel-throwing, and glaze chemistry.
Gallery Exhibitions and Regional Impact
Belling’s work was not confined to the classroom; she was a highly active participant in the regional art market:
Cross-State Exhibitions: Her award-winning watercolors and ceramics were regularly selected for competitive gallery
exhibitions throughout both Wisconsin and Illinois.
Art Advocacy & Leadership: She utilized her platform as a recognized artist to promote local galleries, organize community art shows, and bridge the gap between academic art and commercial exhibition spaces.
Contributions to Arts Education: Belling believed that creating art and teaching art were inseparable. Her most profound contribution to the art world was her mentorship of the next generation of creators:
Cultivating Future Talent: From 1974 until 1997, she developed a rigorous studio arts curriculum at Parker High School. She prepared hundreds of young artists for higher education, teaching them not only technical proficiency in painting and pottery but also how to build cohesive portfolios.
Professionalization of Art Teachers: By winning the prestigious Kohl Teacher Fellowship and being named Janesville Teacher of the Year in 1994, she elevated the status of arts educators statewide, proving that the arts were vital to public education.
Enduring Legacy: Belling’s career was cut short when she passed away at her home in Janesville at the age of 47. Today, her impact on the painting and art community continues through the Katherine Belling Memorial Scholarship, which financially aids graduating seniors from Parker High School who choose to pursue degrees in fine arts, keeping her passion for creativity alive in the community she loved.
