1970 original abstract expressionist landscape by the late British-American artist Barbara Clinkston (1931–2022). Titled simply "Landscape" on the reverse, the work masterfully balances structural form with a visceral, organic energy. Executed with a dynamic blend of heavy impasto and architectural palette knife strokes, the composition captures a fractured, autumnal woodland scene rendered in a rich, light-filled mid-century palette.
Clinkston’s distinct aesthetic language was recently celebrated as the featured cover art for the University of Washington’s ADRC fine art retrospective, highlighting her market collectibility. While Clinkston later established her studio practice in Seattle, this piece originates from a significant chapter of her career spent living and working in Sacramento, California. The painting is housed in its original, era-authentic minimalist white gallery exhibition frame.
The face is signed "Clinkston" in the lower-left corner. On the reverse, the canvas backing is fully inscribed, titled, and dated by the artist: "Landscape 1970 Barbara Clinkston".
Curated from the private collection of artist Eve Paige Spencer, whose work is held in the permanent collection of the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery at Scripps College, California, and her husband, writer and art collector Donner Spencer. Clinkston's heavy impasto landscape reflects the bold, expressive style that defined this era of West Coast studio art.

The canvas board is structurally sound, and the paint layers are exceptionally stable with crisp, beautifully preserved impasto texture. The painting is professionally secured into its original, era-authentic wood frame. The frame itself shows minor, age-appropriate wear. The vintage hanging wire assembly remains intact and functional, though one original eye-screw shows slight loosening commensurate with age. less
