A handsome English mahogany games table dating to the mid-19th century, thoughtfully designed with multiple playing surfaces in a compact and elegant form.
The table features a sliding top that reveals an original leather-lined backgammon board with gilt decoration, while the reverse of the sliding panel is inlaid with a chessboard, providing two classic games within a single piece of furniture. Two hand-cut dovetailed drawers offer storage for playing pieces and accessories.
Beautifully figured mahogany veneer gives the table a warm, rich appearance, complemented by a deep, naturally aged patina developed over many decades. The table stands on a graceful trestle base with subtly shaped legs, giving it an elegant profile suitable for use as a games table, library table, or occasional table.
Traditional construction details—including hand-cut dovetailed drawers, early hardware, and period joinery—are consistent with English craftsmanship of the mid-19th century. The original leather backgammon playing surface remains intact and contributes significantly to the table’s character and appeal.
Both decorative and functional, this is an increasingly uncommon example of Victorian games furniture that brings history and craftsmanship to a contemporary interior.

A previous repair to one foot has been professionally stabilized, and the table is structurally sound and ready for everyday display and use. The table retains its original leather backgammon playing surface, hand-cut dovetailed drawers, sliding top mechanism, and early construction details. The mahogany veneer exhibits scattered losses, old repairs, finish wear, scratches, and surface marks consistent with age. The chessboard also shows expected wear from long use. These imperfections are cosmetic in nature and contribute to the authentic character of the piece without detracting from its functionality. less
