Antique Dark Wooden Chinese Wedding Basket in Red Lacquer With Floral Painted Lid and bend wood rounded handle. Historically used for transporting gifts or food during a wedding tea ceremony with stackable baskets and carrying handle. Estimated to late Qing Dynasty - early 20th century.
During an engagement, traditionally the groom's family would fill these baskets with gifts for the bride's family, such as food (fruits, rice, or wedding cakes), sewing materials, and ceremonial red sheets for the wedding night. Post weddings, similar lidded buckets were used in everyday rural life for transporting rice, grain, vegetables, or even as containers for travelling actors' props.
