Antique Hudson Delivery Crate by Rugg Manufacturing Co. – Wooden Grocery Basket with Original Advertising, c. 1910–1930
A wonderful early 20th-century Hudson Delivery Crate manufactured by Rugg Manufacturing Company, featuring its original maker's stamp on both long sides. These open slat delivery crates were used by neighborhood grocers, dairies, and general stores for transporting groceries, produce, baked goods, and household provisions before cardboard cartons became commonplace.
Beautifully constructed with sturdy hardwood rails, dozens of turned dowel slats, and a solid wood bottom, this example has developed a warm honey-brown patina from decades of honest use. The original stamped lettering reading "HUDSON DELIVERY CRATE – RUGG MFG. CO." remains visible on both sides, adding wonderful character and authenticity.
Originally designed as a working commercial delivery crate, today it makes an outstanding decorative accent in a farmhouse kitchen, pantry, mudroom, or covered porch. It is equally useful for storing blankets, magazines, firewood kindling, children's books, or displaying seasonal décor.
Unlike many surviving examples that have broken slats or loose joinery, this crate remains remarkably solid with all of its turned dowels intact and securely fastened. The wood displays the rich surface wear and mellow patina that collectors seek, telling the story of a century of practical use.

History
Rugg Manufacturing Company, founded in Leominster, Massachusetts, became one of New England's best-known manufacturers of wooden boxes, delivery crates, baskets, and commercial handling equipment during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their durable crates supplied grocers, dairies, bakeries, and retailers throughout the Northeast.
"Hudson Delivery Crate" was one of Rugg's branded commercial products, built to withstand the rigors of daily home delivery when neighborhood merchants routinely delivered groceries by horse-drawn wagon and, later, early delivery trucks. Surviving examples with their original factory stamp are increasingly difficult to find, especially in such solid, original condition.
