A rare coffee pot produced by the Limbach porcelain factory, Thuringia, c.1780-1790. The elegant cylindrical form is decorated with finely painted landscape scenes featuring ruins, rivers, winding paths and small figures on a soft pale yellow ground.
Delicate gilding highlights the shoulder, handle and spout, while the domed cover repeats the landscape decoration and retains its pierced steam vent and gilded pinecone finial.
Founded by Johann Gotthelf Greiner in 1772, Limbach became one of the leading early porcelain manufactories of Thuringia. The Victoria and Albert Museum preserves three Limbach coffee pots from the same period, two of which display closely related forms, providing a valuable museum comparison for the present example.
The underside preserves traces of a worn blue clover-leaf factory mark together with impressed factory or model numbers.
A rare and highly decorative example of late eighteenth-century German porcelain with strong museum comparables.
