This art form was … Read more Each picture depicts a peasant rendered in bits of fabric and standing within a gouache landscape. This art form was popular from the late 18th C through the Victorian era. The artist took a base hand-colored engraving, watercolor, or fashion plate print and meticulously cut out specific elements. The figures were then raised away from the background using tiny hidden spacers. Scraps of silk, satin, or other fabrics were then layered and glued directly over the paper giving a realistic physical depth, wrinkles, and shadows. The frames and seed glass and hangers are original to the art. Each measures 10 5/8" H x 8 5?8" W x 1.5" deep.
