A pair of Chinese Peking (Beijing) glass vases, each of baluster form with a flared trumpet neck, cased in cobalt-blue … Read more A pair of Chinese Peking (Beijing) glass vases, each of baluster form with a flared trumpet neck, cased in cobalt-blue glass overlaid with a white glass layer. The white layer has been carved in cameo relief to depict a large butterfly in flight on the shoulder of each vase, with flowering branches and grasses rising from rockwork at the base; additional smaller carved butterflies appear on the reverse of each vase. The rim and foot are finished in white glass. Carving shows fine detail work — vein lines on the butterfly wings, layered petal work on the blossoms — consistent with hand-cut cameo glass technique.
