An authentic early 20th-century Library Bureau four-drawer oak card catalog, crafted in richly figured quarter-sawn oak and retaining its original brass label holders, drawer pulls, and the coveted "Library Bureau Sole Makers" maker's badge.
Founded by Melvil Dewey—the creator of the Dewey Decimal Classification system—Library Bureau became the gold standard for library furnishings and card catalog systems throughout North America. Their cabinetry was built to institutional standards and is renowned today for its exceptional craftsmanship and timeless design.
This compact four-drawer example showcases dramatic tiger oak grain on every visible surface, including the beautifully finished paneled back, allowing it to be displayed from any angle. The warm aged patina and honest wear reflect decades of careful use while preserving the cabinet's original character.
Inside, each drawer retains its original adjustable metal card guide rail, designed to organize standard 4" x 6" library or index cards. The original drawer stop clamps are no longer present, but the drawers operate smoothly and the cabinet remains fully functional.
Perfect today as a desktop organizer, recipe file, craft supply cabinet, office accessory, or simply as an outstanding piece of early American library history.
