Its design is distinguished by exceptionally slender, fluted legs and elegantly curved cutouts—a form that combines formal lightness with structural strength. Historical Context: Sellettes were a popular type of furniture for prestigious living spaces during the Art Nouveau period. They served as plant stands or decorative columns in the parlors and living rooms of the upper middle class. The exceptional slenderness of the legs—characteristic of Art Nouveau aesthetics—was made possible by meticulous craftsmanship and confidence in the load-bearing capacity of the wood. Such pieces demonstrated taste and affluence without being ostentatious. Design: Art Nouveau, circa 1900. The clear geometric form—square platforms at the top and bottom, four independent legs—reflects the turn toward reduction that characterizes Art Nouveau. The fluting on the legs is not ornamentation but rather a structural and visual reinforcement. The curved cutouts on the side panels subtly incorporate organic forms without becoming overly decorative. Function: Originally conceived as a plant stand or decorative pedestal for floral arrangements and art objects in formal living spaces. Today, it can be used in a variety of ways: as a side table, a column for sculptures or plants, or as a standalone piece of design history. Dimensions: Dimensions to follow. Material and condition: Wood, surface with age-appropriate patina. Well-preserved with visible signs of use, typical of an early 20th-century piece of furniture. The construction is stable and fully functional. See less
