A refined example of French post-war design, this modular oak sofa by Guillerme et Chambron captures the designers' distinctive balance between craftsmanship and sculptural form. Produced in France during the 1960s, it reflects the philosophy that defined their work: honest materials, architectural construction, and furniture designed to be appreciated from every angle.
Design
Crafted from solid oak, the frame displays the exceptional woodworking for which Guillerme et Chambron became renowned. Gently rounded rails, sculpted tapered legs, and elegantly proportioned vertical slats form a structure that is both robust and refined. The beautifully slatted backs transform the sofa into a freestanding piece, allowing it to divide a room without concealing its craftsmanship.
Integrated oak shelves at each end subtly extend the silhouette and provide a practical surface for books or decorative objects. Newly upholstered in a soft sand-coloured bouclé fabric, the generous cushions remain faithful to the spirit of the original upholstery while offering contemporary comfort. Delicate button tufting introduces texture and rhythm, complementing the warm character of the oak without overwhelming the clean geometry of the design.
Guillerme et Chambron produced furniture that celebrated craftsmanship over ornament. This modular sofa is a wonderful representation of that approach, combining comfort, versatility, and exceptional cabinetmaking in a design that remains as relevant today as it was more than sixty years ago.
Condition
The solid oak frame has been carefully restored while preserving its natural character and patina. The sofa has been newly upholstered and is presented in excellent vintage condition with only minor signs of age consistent with careful use. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
