This handsome circa 1890 Grand Tour bronze is a miniature reduction of the celebrated Herculaneum Runner, one of the most admired ancient bronze sculptures discovered at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum during the Bourbon excavations of the 18th century. The original antique bronze, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, was unearthed alongside an extraordinary collection of Roman bronzes that profoundly influenced the Neoclassical movement and became essential models for Grand Tour travelers visiting Italy. Although traditionally known as the Herculaneum Runner, the figure is also sometimes identified as an athlete preparing to sprint or engage in competition, admired for its naturalistic anatomy and dynamic sense of movement.
Beautifully cast with finely modeled musculature and graceful proportions, this late Victorian example faithfully captures the expressive pose and classical elegance of the ancient original. The sculpture retains its original untouched black patina over bronze, with subtle warm highlights naturally appearing on the highest points through more than a century of gentle handling.
Measuring 3.5 inches high, 2.75 inches wide, and 1 inch deep, this attractive miniature is perfectly suited for display on a desk, bookshelf, or within a cabinet of curiosities. The figure possesses a satisfying weight and quality, weighing 157 grams, reflecting the craftsmanship associated with fine 19th-century decorative bronzes. Good antique condition with light signs of wear and handling. Original felt bottom. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
An exceptional example of a Grand Tour souvenir, it offers collectors a tangible connection to one of antiquity's most celebrated archaeological discoveries and would make a distinguished addition to any collection of Classical antiquities, Grand Tour objects, or 19th-century decorative arts.
