Elegant in both form and ornament, the mirror features a gracefully shaped glass plate set within a molded wooden frame, richly decorated with oriental lacquer (japanned) decoration. The frame rests on an integrated easel-style support, allowing the mirror to stand securely on a dressing table, vanity, or writing desk.

The japanned surface is adorned with delicate gold-toned scenes and motifs inspired by traditional Chinese landscapes and decorative symbolism. Such imagery often included pagodas, bridges, stylized foliage, birds, and scenic landscapes, motifs that symbolized harmony, prosperity, longevity, and the poetic beauty of the natural world in Chinese artistic tradition. These designs were not only decorative but also conveyed a sense of refinement and cultured taste, highly prized by Western collectors of the period.

Measuring 21 inches high, 16 inches wide, and 10.5 inches deep, this piece has a commanding presence while remaining perfectly suited for tabletop display. Its sculptural silhouette, ornate lacquer decoration, and historic export provenance make it a remarkable decorative object—ideal for an English country house interior, Chinoiserie collection, or antique vanity display. Good antique condition with age-related signs of wear/handling. There is hazing and spotting to the mirror with one surface scratch. There are small losses to the lacquer. The easel back is delicate but original. The easel stand is intentional meant to bow in order to elevate the mirror for a table top angle (see side profile photos and close ups). Mirrors of this type were commonly produced in Chinese export workshops for Western markets, particularly for Britain and America, where the demand for Chinoiserie and lacquerware furnishings flourished throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Skilled artisans created pieces specifically tailored to Western furniture forms—such as dressing mirrors, cabinets, tea caddies, and writing boxes—while incorporating traditional Eastern lacquer techniques and imagery. The result was a distinctive fusion of Eastern craftsmanship and Western function.
