Japanese ceramic reamers became popular household items during the interwar years and were widely exported to the United States before electric juicers and frozen concentrates changed kitchen habits.
This two-piece example features a removable hand-painted reamer with a pierced strainer that rests atop the matching pitcher. The cheerful yellow body is accented with green, burgundy, blue, and ochre details beneath a beautifully aged crackle glaze. The extensive crazing, darkened foot rim, and honest wear are consistent with a well-loved early piece and add to its wonderful cottage and folk-art appeal.
Measures approximately 6.5 inches tall with the reamer in place, 3 inches tall without the top, 5.5 inches wide from handle to spout, and 4.5 inches deep.
There are age-related chips, glaze wear, and allover crazing with darkening that has developed naturally over time. No repairs were noted. The underside bears the Royal Japan mark.
