A superb antique Persian Bidjar rug, handwoven around 1920, representing one of the finest weaving traditions of western Persia. Known as the "Iron Rugs of Persia," Bidjars are celebrated for their extraordinarily dense weave, remarkable durability, and exceptional craftsmanship, making them among the most sought-after Persian rugs by collectors and decorators alike.
This beautiful example features a rich deep terracotta-red field filled with an intricate Herati (Mahi) pattern, centered by a striking geometric medallion in shades of ivory, navy, turquoise, and soft rose. The field is framed by a dramatic midnight-blue main border displaying stylized rosettes, palmettes, and angular floral motifs, creating a bold and harmonious contrast. The crisp drawing, balanced proportions, and vibrant natural dyes reflect the quality associated with the finest Bidjar workshops.
Woven with exceptionally high-grade hand-spun wool on a sturdy cotton foundation, the rug has the heavy, compact construction that gives Bidjar carpets their legendary strength and longevity. The wool has developed a rich, velvety texture, while the vegetable-dyed colors have mellowed beautifully over the past century.
Measuring 4'5" × 7'2", this rug is in excellent, near-perfect original condition, with a full, even pile, beautifully preserved selvages and ends, and virtually no signs of wear. It is an outstanding example of an early 20th-century Bidjar that combines exceptional quality, durability, and decorative appeal.
