Painted circa 1880, only a few years after the lighthouse first entered service, this atmospheric marine landscape captures the untamed power of the Atlantic Ocean as foaming waves crash against the rugged granite shoreline beneath an immense, storm-laden sky. Historical Context
Completed in 1874, La Corbière Lighthouse was constructed to safeguard one of Jersey's most treacherous stretches of coastline. The reefs extending from the headland claimed numerous ships during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, making the area infamous among mariners. One of the most significant disasters was the loss of the mail packet Express in 1859, an event that intensified public demand for a lighthouse at La Corbière. Painted only a few years after the lighthouse entered service, this work captures not only the rugged beauty of Jersey's coastline but also its rich maritime heritage. The inclusion of shipwreck timbers in the foreground serves as a poignant reminder of the perils of the sea and reinforces the lighthouse's enduring role as a symbol of protection and resilience.
About the Artist
Sarah Louisa Kilpack (1839–1909) was one of Britain's foremost Victorian female marine painters. Born in Bexley Heath, Kent, she became celebrated for her atmospheric depictions of the coastlines of Cornwall, Devon and the Channel Islands. Working during the late Victorian period, Kilpack developed a distinctive style characterised by luminous skies, dramatic weather and an exceptional understanding of the movement of the sea. Her paintings were widely admired during her lifetime and today are represented in both public and private collections. As appreciation for important nineteenth-century women artists continues to grow, her finest works remain highly sought after by collectors of British marine painting, Victorian landscapes and maritime art.

Condition Report
The painting is presented in good overall condition. There are areas of minor paint retouching within the lower section of the composition, principally to the sea in the foreground and to a small area of sea wash immediately above the rocks, together with minor retouching along the far edge. These restorations are unobtrusive and do not detract from the overall presentation of the work. The surface displays age-related craquelure together with scattered foxing consistent with its age. The later decorative gilt moulded frame exhibits age-related wear commensurate with handling.
