This carefully selected group illustrates a fascinating cross-section of medieval European society, including noblemen and noblewomen, clergy, scholars, civic officials, courtiers, and attendants. The figures are depicted in richly colored garments based on authentic medieval sources, including illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, paintings, tomb effigies, and historical monuments. The series was created during the height of the Gothic Revival, when artists and historians sought to accurately reconstruct the fashions and customs of the Middle Ages. Paul Mercuri's work became one of the most respected costume references of the nineteenth century and remains highly sought after by collectors, historians, decorators, and institutions. The plates feature elegant compositions with generous margins and delicate hand coloring. Rich reds, greens, golds, purples, and blacks bring the medieval costumes to life while preserving the refined aesthetic typical of French costume publications of the period. Together the ten prints create an impressive decorative ensemble that offers a visual survey of medieval dress and social rank. These original prints are ideal for display as a gallery wall, in libraries, studies, country houses, museums, hospitality projects, or interiors inspired by European history and classical design. This set consists of original prints published in 1845. They are not reproductions or later copies. Condition Report: Generally very good condition for age. Light age toning, occasional scattered foxing, and minor handling marks consistent with nineteenth-century prints. Colors remain fresh and attractive throughout. Individual sheets may show slight variations in condition typical of a bound publication. Framing Tips: This set displays beautifully in matching walnut, ebonized, or gilt frames with wide ivory museum mats. Particularly effective when arranged in two horizontal rows of five, creating an elegant museum-style presentation. Any framed images shown are for display inspiration only. The prints are sold unframed.
