This exceptional set of three original Vivai del Sud armchairs, manufactured in Italy during the 1970s, represents one of the most refined expressions of the so-called Italian Tropical Style, a movement that established the company as an international benchmark for luxury furniture made with natural materials. Their design combines a strong architectural presence with exceptional craftsmanship, resulting in three pieces with a powerful sculptural character that transcend their function as seating to become true elements of interior architecture.
Each armchair is made entirely of Pencil Bamboo, one of Vivai del Sud's signature materials, prized for the uniformity of its canes, its strength, and its extraordinary capacity to create complex, continuous curves. The individual pieces were carefully heat-bent and hand-assembled using traditional Italian manufacturing processes, resulting in a surprisingly solid yet visually remarkably light structure.
Their design is distinguished by a composition of continuous curves that envelop the seat with uncommon elegance. The backrest, sides, and armrests form a single, fluid silhouette, culminating in the characteristic spiral finials made of coiled bamboo, one of the most recognizable features of Vivai del Sud's aesthetic language. The undulating front adds movement to the whole, while the perfectly aligned succession of fine Pencil bamboo rods creates a delicate interplay of light and shadow that enhances the depth of the original honey-toned varnish. The slight splay of the legs and the carefully considered proportions of each element give these pieces a striking sense of balance, making their presence sculptural without sacrificing visual lightness.
All three pieces retain their original structure and are in excellent condition. The bamboo maintains all its firmness and stability, while the original factory-applied varnish has evolved naturally over more than five decades, acquiring a deep honey hue, rich in nuances and warm reflections. Having never been sanded, repainted, or subjected to aggressive restoration, the set retains an authentic patina impossible to artificially reproduce and especially prized in original Italian furniture of this period.
Complete sets of this model appear very rarely on the market. The preservation of three identical armchairs, kept together and in this condition, provides a particularly attractive visual coherence and compositional harmony. Having all three pieces allows one to appreciate the design as it was originally conceived, enhancing its sculptural presence and the balance of its proportions.
