The brown is possibly bistre, which the artist was known to use.The scene depicts a North African Islamic wedding procession titled 'Mariage Moresque', which was reproduced in the French travel anthology 'Choix de voyages dans les quatre parties du monde, ou précis des voyages les plus intéressans, par terre et par mer, entrepris depuis l'année 1806 jusqu'à ce jour', published between 1821 and 1823.The anthology text was written by Jacques MacCarthy (1785–1835), who was originally from Ireland but went into service in the French army in 1800. He became a battalion commander, and in 1830 became head of the statistics section at the War Depot. He was a member of the Geographical Society and in this role published a number of geographical texts. Thomas Charles Naudet (1773–1810) was himself widely travelled and provided illustrations for the publication.In black ink over brown wash (bistre) with white bodycolour highlights.
