This is a beautiful Original Oil on Linen Canvas by listed Ukrainian-American Post-Impressionist painter Mischa Askenazy (1888–1961) titled Vase with Flowers. Known for his expressive brushwork and vibrant use of color, Askenazy was one of Southern California's most respected painters during the first half of the twentieth century, exhibiting extensively throughout the state and earning numerous awards during his long career.
This outstanding still life depicts a lush arrangement of roses, hydrangeas, and other garden flowers overflowing from an elegant decorative vase. Richly textured brushwork and a harmonious palette reflect the Post-Impressionist influence seen throughout Askenazy's work. Signed "M. Askenazy" in the lower left. Sold unframed.
According to the provenance provided when we acquired the painting, this work was a gift from the late Norton Simon of Pasadena, California.

About the Artist: Born near Odessa, Russia (now Ukraine) on Feb. 22, 1888. At age four Askenazy (né Ashkenazy) arrived in NYC where he spent his childhood. Opting for an art career, he studied at the NAD under Jones, Volk, and Maynard; upon winning a scholarship, he traveled in France and Italy for two years. During the 1920s he averaged $50,000 per year as a portraitist to the wealthy. A portrait commission brought him to Montecito, CA in 1925 and, charmed by the climate, he decided to settle in Los Angeles. He painted there until his demise on July 13, 1961. His works, which show the influence of Cézanne, include portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and landscapes. Exh: Calif.
