Original work made by Frederik Lizen (Antwerp, 1986) for a series of miniature works on cars, roads and parking lots he made in 2022. This miniature work is made of bitumen, cardboard, plaster, metal and paint. It’s name ‘Eclipse’ is referring to a an astronomical event occurring when the moon comes between the sun and the earth. If all three celestial bodies align you get a phenomenon called syzygy, temporarily obscuring a part of the sun or even putting us into complete darkness. What if you could see past this Eclipse, shove it aside and see what’s real? What if you could lift up the lid off the earth to discover a set of stairs. What if you climb down these stairs, maybe the real world is there, patiently waiting for us on the other side? The work is meant to be put on a table and the sewage lid is not fixed to the work but can be placed loosely like you will. The work is in good, original condition.
Frederik Lizen (1986, Antwerp), mostly operating under his nom de plume ‘En Plein Public’, is a Belgian artist. He has put his name literally out there since 2014 with dozens of street works, all made on his favourite canvas: the grey areas of the city of Antwerp. His work is intentionally commenting on today’s world, evoking a dialogue with it’s surroundings and making passersby smile, ponder and interact with his work. One of his most recognised murals is a 150 meter long mural in the Pelikaanstraat across Antwerp Central Station, constantly changing and shifting over the years. This summer Frederik is presenting some works at Moving Motion, an exhibition in a church in Leffinge curated by Verbeke Foundation. He also took part in ‘Painting after painting’ in Smak in Ghent and showed a big work on the facade of the M HKA in Antwerp. With ‘It’s Sunday at Sea’ and ‘the Crystal Ship’ his works were also shown in public spaces scathered over the city of Ostend.Previously he did solo and group expostions at Geukens & De Vil, Valerie Troost, Valerie Traan, Barbé Gallery among others. His works are part of important art collections, private collections but also the art collection of the Flemish Community (shown in the tv series Aanwinst) and the permanent collection of Verbeke Foundation. One of his last works was acquired by a collector in Libanon. Although he has a very strong connection to the city of Antwerp, Lizen also held an artist residency in Arteventura in the North of Spain and, last winter, in the refugio Val di Togno in the Italian Alps.
