Designed by Uno and Östen Kristiansson for Luxus, Sweden, this table lamp exemplifies the innovative spirit that defined Scandinavian lighting during the 1960s and 1970s. Combining traditional craftsmanship with an experimental use of materials, the design reflects the forward-thinking approach that established Luxus as one of Sweden’s leading lighting manufacturers of the period.
Founded in Vittsjö by Uno Kristiansson in the early 1950s, Luxus became renowned for its distinctive interpretation of Swedish Modern design. While the company is often associated with its sophisticated use of teak, it also embraced emerging materials such as acrylic, glass, and plastics, creating lighting that felt both progressive and timeless. Many of Luxus’ most celebrated models were designed in-house by Uno and Östen Kristiansson, whose work continues to be highly regarded by collectors of Scandinavian design.
This lamp is defined by its architectural silhouette, combining a substantial glazed ceramic base with a gracefully tapered acrylic shade. The contrast between the glossy ceramic and the translucent acrylic creates a refined interplay of material, texture, and light. When illuminated, the shade diffuses a soft, ambient glow that enhances the sculptural quality of the form while providing warm, atmospheric lighting.
The restrained geometry and strong vertical emphasis reflect the optimism of an era driven by material innovation and technological progress, yet the lamp retains the balance, functionality, and understated elegance that define Swedish Modern design. Equally compelling as a functional light source and as a sculptural decorative object, it possesses a confident presence without overwhelming its surroundings.
Today, lighting by Luxus and the Kristiansson brothers is increasingly sought after for its combination of craftsmanship, innovation, and distinctly Swedish character. This lamp is an excellent example of the company’s ability to unite modern materials with timeless design, resulting in an object that remains as relevant today as when it was first produced.
