Designed by vilhelm lauritzen in 1938 and produced by louis poulsen, the vl38 is one of the most enduring examples of danish functionalist lighting. Originally developed for the radiohuset broadcasting headquarters in copenhagen, the model embodies lauritzen’s architectural philosophy, where lighting, form, and function are seamlessly integrated.
this particular example is believed to date from the 1950s and retains several desirable early production characteristics. The fitting bears the original louis poulsen logo, while the brass stem is stamped “omi type 450”, details that support its authenticity and place it among the lamp’s earlier production examples. These original features contribute significantly to its historical and collector appeal.
the design is characterized by its elegantly curved lacquered shade, slender brass stem, and adjustable construction, allowing light to be directed with precision. More than eight decades after its introduction, the vl38 remains remarkably contemporary, a testament to lauritzen’s ability to unite technical innovation with visual clarity.
widely regarded as one of denmark’s most influential architects, vilhelm lauritzen played a central role in shaping modern danish design. His lighting designs for louis poulsen remain highly sought after by collectors, particularly early examples that preserve original production details and materials.
the lamp displays an attractive patina consistent with age and use and has been professionally rewired for modern use. The adjustable construction allows for a maximum height of 55 cm and is fitted with a 1-meter cable. This piece has an attribution mark,
