Carefully rendered with scientific precision and artistic refinement, the print forms part of Karl Joseph Brodtmann's celebrated Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche, published in Lindau in 1816. The upper illustration features the Serval, a graceful African wild cat recognized by its exceptionally long legs, large ears, and beautifully spotted coat. Native to the grasslands and savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, the serval is one of the continent's most successful hunters, capable of locating prey through sound alone and making remarkable vertical leaps. The lower image portrays the Eurasian Lynx, Europe's largest wild cat. Characterized by its tufted ears, broad paws, and dense coat, the lynx has long fascinated naturalists and hunters alike. During the nineteenth century, it remained one of the most elusive predators of Europe's forests and mountain regions. Swiss artist Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862) was among the foremost natural history illustrators of the early lithographic era. His works are admired for combining scientific accuracy with decorative appeal, making them equally desirable for collectors of zoological material and interior designers seeking authentic period artwork. The contrast between the spotted African serval and the thick-coated northern lynx creates a visually balanced composition while also illustrating the remarkable diversity of the cat family. The restrained background focuses attention entirely on the animals, allowing the subtle hand coloring and fine lithographic detail to shine. Today, original Brodtmann lithographs are increasingly sought after by collectors of natural history, wildlife art, antique scientific illustration, and early lithography. This sheet is particularly attractive because it combines two iconic feline species from different continents on a single plate. Condition report: Good condition considering age. Light age toning, occasional foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with a print more than 200 years old. Original hand coloring remains attractive and well preserved. Please examine photographs carefully. Visible plate and publication characteristics consistent with the period. Framing tips: This print displays beautifully in a dark walnut, ebonized, or black-and-gilt frame with an ivory museum mat and fine gold fillet. The warm natural tones of the cats make it particularly suitable for studies, libraries, safari-inspired interiors, country houses, and contemporary spaces featuring wildlife art.
