The composition shows two adult tapirs accompanied by a juvenile, whose spotted and striped coat accurately reflects the distinctive appearance of young tapirs in nature. Created by Swiss artist and natural history illustrator Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862), the print was published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the celebrated *Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche*. Produced during the formative years of lithographic printing, the series introduced European audiences to animals from around the world through carefully observed and beautifully hand-colored illustrations. The tapir is among the oldest surviving groups of large mammals, with ancestors dating back millions of years. Despite their pig-like appearance, tapirs are more closely related to horses and rhinoceroses. Their flexible, elongated snout is perfectly adapted for browsing leaves, shoots, and aquatic vegetation in tropical forests and wetlands. Brodtmann's illustration captures the robust build and distinctive profile of these remarkable animals while also depicting the spotted juvenile, an important detail often omitted from early zoological illustrations. The inclusion of the young animal provides both scientific interest and visual appeal, transforming the image from a simple species portrait into a family group study. The soft palette of earthy browns, greys, greens, and muted purples creates a harmonious composition that is both informative and decorative. The careful hand coloring highlights the texture of the animals' coats and the lush riverside habitat in which they live. Today, original Brodtmann lithographs are highly sought after by collectors of zoology, natural history, wildlife art, and early scientific illustration. This sheet is particularly desirable due to its appealing family-group composition and its depiction of one of the world's most ancient and fascinating mammal species.
