A striking Japanese Kutani porcelain figure of Bodhidharma, known in Japan as Daruma, dating to the early 20th century. Richly coloured glazes and bold modelling give the sculpture a strong visual presence.
Daruma is depicted standing in flowing iron-red robes with broad folds that create a sense of movement and volume. His intense expression, stylised beard and exposed chest follow traditional representations of the Zen patriarch.
In his hand he carries a Buddhist fly whisk, a traditional symbol of spiritual authority in Zen Buddhism. Turquoise glaze highlights the lower robe and base, providing an attractive contrast to the darker body colours.
According to Zen tradition, Bodhidharma's teachings placed meditation, discipline and personal enlightenment at the centre of spiritual life. Over time his image became a symbol of perseverance, resilience and determination throughout East Asia.
Large Kutani figures of Daruma are particularly desirable for their symbolic significance, impressive scale and strong decorative presence. In a market increasingly flooded with fakes, this figure remains a genuine piece of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
