This refined spruce antique painted chest is clearly inscribed with the date 1773 on its facade. The piece features a solid rectangular structure with a projecting, overhanging hinged lid highlighted by prominent perimeter moldings.
The front facade is neatly tripartite by molded vertical stiles that define three large rectangular panels. Within the side panels, the historic date is split into two sections: the digits “17” on the left and “73” on the right, meticulously rendered in a light pigment over neutral sand-toned backgrounds. The central and lateral reserves are framed by broad borders in a rich, deep blue-green tone, enriched by fine impressed scrollwork decorations.
The central panel houses a beautifully shaped wrought-iron escutcheon, completely contemporary to the piece’s construction, preserved with its original ring-top key. The sides of the chest mirror the decorative elegance of the front, featuring a single large, light-colored rectangular panel framed by the same dark border with impressed motifs. The outer finish outstandingly preserves its luxury original polychromy, enhanced over centuries by a gorgeous, warm natural patina of time and careful use.
Restorations performed on all our furniture:
– Structural restoration: consolidation of degraded areas, precise reconstruction of minor missing elements, closing of any splits or shrinkage gaps on the back panel, full inspection and repair of original hardware.
– Meticulous and thorough anti-woodworm treatment.
– Careful cleaning and sanitization of the interiors.
– External finish nourished with fine, warm natural beeswax.
– Internal finish protected with traditional shellac, a natural alcohol-based varnish.
