This is a handsome mixed marriage of two similar sets of early New England spindle backed Hitchcock chairs, and are made of pine and maple with primitive hand painted with decoration. All four have a red flower design with green leaves on the top back. Two of them are stenciled on the seats with gold designs. The measurements above pertain to the two stenciled ones, the other two are very close but measure one inch shorter and one inch deeper.
"The Hitchcock chair is an iconic 19th-century American "fancy chair" pioneered by craftsman Lambert Hitchcock in 1818. By adapting early assembly-line methods, he mass-produced durable, stenciled chairs. This made elegant, decorative furniture highly affordable to everyday households."
