Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, the historic, clay-rich region of Bohemia became part of the newly formed nation of Czechoslovakia. This era was marked by a fascinating artistic transition: factories preserved traditional, highly ornate 18th- and 19th-century imperial styles—such as the vibrant cobalt, yellow, and heavy gold leaf seen here—while adapting to modern global markets. The "P.A.L.T." mark belonged to Porzellanfabrik Adolf Laufer, a leading Bohemian ceramic factory based in Turn-Teplitz (now Trnovany), Czech Republic, from 1919 to 1938. Specializing in high-quality porcelain for global export, P.A.L.T. embodies Bohemian ceramic mastery by drawing on the legacy of regional giants. The complex, double-handled structural shape of the bowl and lid was manufactured using mechanized plaster molds and liquid porcelain slip to ensure symmetry and durability. The classical, figural vignette on the front was applied using a specialized lithographic transfer decal technique rather than being painted entirely by hand. This allowed the factory to replicate fine, intricate artistic scenes perfectly. The heavy, bright gold gilding on the handles, upper rim, and base was applied meticulously by hand using fine brushes before the piece underwent its final high-temperature kiln firing. See less
