Description:
A magnificent second-quarter 19th-century Maritime Canadian Grecian Empire "sopha" or settee, heavily influenced by the prominent cabinetmakers of Saint John, New Brunswick, such as Thomas Nisbet, Alexander Lawrence, and John Warren Moore.
Crafted from premium imported Caribbean mahogany — a hallmark of Saint John’s thriving 19th-century port economy — this piece features a beautifully figured, unmolested wood frame with classic scrolled arms, carved shell/feather motifs on the arm faces, and elegant swept legs on original brass casters.
Provenance & History:
Acquired from a multi-generational family estate in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. The previous elderly owner inherited the piece from her grandmother in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where it had been in the family since the early 20th century.
Condition & Restoration:
The original mahogany finish remains untouched and in excellent antique condition, displaying a rich, deep patina built over nearly two centuries. In 2020, the settee was professionally stripped of a non-original 1970s corduroy cover and expertly reupholstered by a traditional European craftsman in Nova Scotia. It is covered in a premium, elegant floral and botanical patterned tapestry fabric that beautifully complements its classical silhouette. Structural integrity is excellent, tight, and ready for use.
