Monumental Italian Carrara Marble Sculpture of Cleopatra and Mark Antony
Late 19th Century
Neoclassical Sculptural Group
Offered for sale is an exceptional monumental Italian Carrara marble sculptural group depicting the legendary lovers Cleopatra and Mark Antony, masterfully executed in the refined Neoclassical tradition of the late nineteenth century.
Hand-carved from luminous white Carrara marble, the composition portrays the reclining Cleopatra resting gracefully upon an elaborately carved classical bench while being embraced by Mark Antony. Their expressions and gestures convey remarkable tenderness and intimacy, capturing one of history's most celebrated romantic narratives with extraordinary elegance.
The sculptor has enriched the composition with an abundance of symbolic classical ornament including finely carved sphinx-form armrests, Greek key borders, floral garlands, scrolls, a lyre, and other allegorical attributes associated with music, learning, beauty, and antiquity. Every element has been executed with exceptional attention to detail, demonstrating the skill and artistry of a master Italian marble workshop.
Beautifully carved flowing drapery contrasts with delicately rendered anatomy, while the deeply sculpted decorative elements provide visual richness from every angle. The sculpture is fully finished and intended to be viewed in the round, making it equally impressive as a centerpiece in a grand residence, gallery, museum, or luxury interior.
Inspired by the great Neoclassical sculptors of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this magnificent work embodies the elegance, romance, and timeless beauty of classical art.
An exceptional statement piece for collectors of Grand Tour sculpture, Italian marble, classical antiquities, and museum-quality decorative arts.
