A monumental and visually arresting Murano art glass sculpture by Venetian master Stefano Toso, titled Cometa, hand-blown, signed, and accompanied by its original gallery provenance.
Executed in richly layered cobalt blue, ruby red, and crystal-clear glass using the traditional sommerso technique, the sculpture displays remarkable depth, suspended controlled bubble inclusions (bullicante), and a graceful organic form that evokes a comet in motion while remaining equally suggestive of marine life or celestial movement. The dynamic composition exemplifies the expressive sculptural language that has distinguished Toso's studio work within the modern Murano glass tradition.
Born into one of Murano's historic glassmaking families, Stefano Toso established his own studio in 1977 and became known for combining traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques with refined sculptural forms and sophisticated cold-working methods. His works are represented in private collections worldwide and are admired for their technical precision, fluid movement, and contemporary artistic vision.
The underside is hand-etched:
"S. Toso – Omaggio a Christian R. Lassen," indicating a dedicated example associated with acclaimed marine artist Christian R. Lassen. While the precise circumstances of the inscription remain undocumented, the sculpture is further accompanied by its original Atlantis Gallery (Key West, Florida) bill of sale dated 2001, identifying the work as Cometa, documenting the Murano attribution, and recording its original purchase price of $2,250. Original gallery documentation of this nature is rarely retained and provides an exceptional layer of provenance.
Measuring an impressive 19 inches in length, this substantial display-scale sculpture possesses remarkable architectural presence. Its dramatic scale, vibrant coloration, and elegant movement make it equally suited to a serious Murano glass collection or as a commanding focal point within a sophisticated contemporary, modern, or coastal interior.
An exceptional example of late twentieth-century Murano studio glass, combining masterful Venetian craftsmanship, sculptural abstraction, and documented provenance in a work of remarkable visual impact.
